There are things call nutrients. They're things we get from food that we need to live and they help our bodies and overall health. Nutrients are fats and oils, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water.
Nutrients are measured in Kilo calories. A KCal is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1g of water by 1 degree Celsius. A calorie is another name for a kilo calorie. Fats and oils are exactly what they're called... Fats and oils. We get fats from fat on meats, or unhealthy fat (saturated fat) from junk food. Some healthy fats are omega 3 and omega 6. Oils can come from oils you'd fry stuff with. Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy for the body, especially for the brain. Carbs are found in grain, veggies, fruits and legumes. Proteins are chains of amino acids. Proteins are a good source of energy but not the primary source. Proteins are important for building cells and tissues, maintaining bones, repairing damage and regulating metabolism Macro nutrients - these are nutrients that humans need large amounts of like Carbs, protiens and fats and oils. |
Vitamins are organic molecules that assist in regulating body processes. Vitamins are macro nutrients that do not provide energy for the body, but they are still important.
Minerals are inorganic substances required for body processes. Minerals are things like sodium, calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium. Our bodies need at least 100mg of minerals per day of the major minerals like sodium, calcium, phosphorus, Potassium and magnesium. Water is a critical nutrient for health and survival. Water is involved in many body processes like fluid balance, nerve impulses, muscle contractions, nutrient transport and many more. Micro nutrients - these are nutrients that are required in smaller amounts like vitamins and minerals. |
Why is nutrition important?
Nutrition is important because it can prevent diseases like scurvy, heart diseases and osteoarthritis. Nutrition is also apart of just being healthy, it's eating healthy. So, having good nutrition is just helping your overall health. For athletes, nutrition is a big factor. At times you'll need to be at a certain weight to perform good, so you can eat healthy and workout to lose weight. Also, eating junk food or non nutritious food isn't the best if you want to be the best athlete you can. If you also have a disease like diabetes, good nutrition is a factor to being healthy and living longer.
